The holiday season is often synonymous with joyous family gatherings and mouth-watering meals. However, it also brings its fair share of challenges, particularly for those susceptible to seasonal illnesses. This past Thanksgiving, I found myself fighting off a viral infection. Despite my better judgment, I was set on preparing a wonderful Thanksgiving meal for my family. Reflecting on it now, I realize I had bitten off more than I could chew. In search of relief, I turned to my trusted essential oils. Here’s a glimpse into my experience and the blends that truly made a difference.

Cautionary Tale: The Importance of Self-Care

Every holiday season seems to bring along an unwelcome bug, and this Thanksgiving was no exception. After a strenuous day of shopping for our holiday feast, I returned home feeling exhausted, only to be confronted with a sore throat, a mild fever, and sinus congestion accompanied by a pounding headache. Ignoring these warning signs and pushing through to prepare dinner only worsened my symptoms.

Lesson Learned: Prioritizing your health is crucial, especially during stressful times. Listen to your body’s signals and give yourself the necessary time to rest and recover. It's also a great opportunity to let someone else take charge instead of insisting on doing everything yourself. Delegating tasks not only lightens your load, allowing you more time to rest, but also empowers others to contribute to the holiday preparations. And above all, don’t forget to follow your own advice. 😉

My Go-To Essential Oil Blends

During my recovery, I relied on specific essential oil blends that I’ve refined over time. Here’s what worked for me:

1. Sore Throat Relief Blend

  • Ingredients: Sandalwood (Santalum album) and Red Myrtle (Myrtus communis), diluted in Jojoba wax (Simmondsia chinensis).
  • Benefits:
    • Red Myrtle: Known for its antimicrobial & expectorant properties, this oil provides gentle relief for respiratory issues and is safe for use with children. It has a sweet, herbal aroma that can open the breath and clear the mind. Despite its fresh scent, myrtle oil is soothing, supporting relaxation even when you're sniffling. Red Myrtle comes from Marocco and usually contains more of the ester myrtenyl acetate than Green Myrtle.
    • Sandalwood: With anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities, sandalwood complements red myrtle by offering soothing relief for sore throats. Its sweet, woody aroma instills feelings of security and trust. This essential oil, used for centuries in spiritual ceremonies, promotes inner peace and serenity. It's also excellent for skincare, soothing sore spots, and nurturing the body's energy flow.
    • Jojoba Wax: Known for its stability, jojoba is ideal for blending. Its subtle aroma allows essential oils to shine. Mimicking the natural oil produced by our skin, jojoba is easily absorbed, providing luxurious hydration without clogging pores.

2. Sinus Congestion and Headache Blend

  • Ingredients: Angelica Root (Angelica archangelica), Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum ct. Linalool), and Cajeput (Melaleuca leucadendron var. Cajeputi), diluted in Sweet Almond oil (Prunus amygdalus var dulcis).
  • Benefits:
    • Angelica Root: With calming and antibacterial properties, angelica boosts circulation and strengthens the immune system. Its protective presence helps you feel grounded and healthy during the cold season. A few drops can encourage clear breathing and restful sleep. It's also beneficial for tender muscles and joints. Note: Angelica root is phototoxic and should not be used topically in dilutions above 0.78%.
    • Basil CT Linalool: This oil offers relaxing properties, helps with congestion relief, and stimulates the immune response. Its sweet aroma clears the head and inspires focus. Use it to find peace and strength amid a busy day.
    • Cajeput: Known for its mild antiseptic properties, cajeput effectively alleviates sinus congestion. Its fresh aroma aids focus and alertness, supporting wellness as the seasons change.
    • Sweet Almond Oil: This oil enhances complexion and skin tone. Rich in antioxidants and vitamin E, it's ideal for blends that help reduce inflammation.

3. Chest Congestion Blend

  • Ingredients: Lemon (Citrus limon), Mandarin (Citrus reticulata), Thyme (Thymus vulgaris ct. Thymol), Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), and Frankincense (Boswellia sacra), diluted in Jojoba wax (Simmondsia chinensis).
  • Benefits:
    • Citrus Oils (Lemon & Mandarin): These oils have uplifting scents and are known for their antiseptic qualities. Lemon’s aroma supports the breath, while red mandarin comforts the mind and heart. Note: Lemon is phototoxic and should not be used topically in dilutions above 0.78%.
    • Thyme CT Thymol: A potent disinfectant with antiviral properties, ideal for respiratory issues. This oil has a warm aroma and is renowned for its germ-fighting capabilities.
    • Cardamom: Provides a comforting aroma and anti-inflammatory benefits. Its spicy scent supports digestive health.
    • Frankincense: A grounding oil that supports respiratory health. Its warm aroma enhances meditation and promotes wellness.
    • Jojoba Wax: A favorite blending base, jojoba hydrates the skin luxuriously.

Facing illness during the holiday season can be challenging, but comfort and relief are attainable with the right approach. My essential oil blends provided not only physical support but also emotional balance and grounding, which were crucial during my recovery.

Final Advice: Always heed your body’s signals. If you start feeling unwell, make self-care and rest a priority over holiday engagements. Your health should always come first!
